First of the Small Fruits in the month of June comes the beautiful, wholesome and appetizing Strawberry. The profits which may result from its cultivation, when properly conduct- ed, are enough to satisfy the highest expectations. Plant in March, April, May, September, October or Nov- ember, on good ground, deeply worked and well manured. Vegetable manure (muck, rotted turf, wood soil, ashes, etc.) is the best. Bone dust is excellent. Set in 3 feet rows, 15 inches apart in row for field culture; and fifteen inches each way for garden, leaving a pathway at every third row. Keep in hills with runners cut, unless troubled with the white grub. Cultivate clean, mulch late in the Fall, uncover crown early in Spring, remove mulch after fruiting, and spade in light dressing of manure.
