Pumpkins are grown chiefly as food for stock. They were formerly esteemed for culinary purposes, but at present are almost entirely superseded by the various squashes, which are in all respects much superior. The usual method of planting Pumpkins is to scatter a few seeds at intervals in the hills when planting Indian corn. In this way good crops of Pumpkins are secured with slight labor and expense. Japanese Pumpkin. Entirely distinct in shape and ap- pearance from all other varieties. The flesh is rich salmon color, finely grained, and of splendid flavor.
