One of two mermaids in Inverarish of the Isle of Raasay.

One of two mermaids in Inverarish of the Isle of Raasay. The Clan chief of the Macleods of Raasay sent an artist to Italy, to return with two life size statues of mermaids. The artist spent years touring Europe at the chiefs expense before coming back with Two statues. The Chief refused to pay, argueing they were larger than life size. Litigation followed at which arguments tried to establish what was life size for a mermaid. The resulting costs helped to bankrupt the Macleods, who eventually had to sell Raasay.
