Bone death. Coloured frontal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the knee of a male patient with severe osteonecrosis (bone death). The bone at top centre is the femur (thigh bone), with the tibia (shin bone) at bottom centre. The dead area of tissue (green) is in the femur. The bone death results from a loss of blood flow to the area, known as an infarction. Osteonecrosis causes causes pain and swelling. Treatment is with pain relief and exercise. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove the dead tissue or replace the joint.
