Danse Macabre, 1779
Engraving by Jacques Gamelin entitled: "A bountiful harvest for death taken from Nouveau recueil d'osteologie et de myologie, 1779." Death, personified by skeletons, claims many victims, some of which are struggling to escape, others that are already dead are dumped into a grave. Dance of Death, also called Danse Macabre (French), Danza Macabra (Italian), Dansul Mortii (Romanian), Danza de la Muerte (Spanish), Dansa de la Mort (Catalan), Danca Macabra (Portuguese language), Totentanz (German), Dodendans (Dutch), Surmatants (Estonian), is an artistic genre of late medieval allegory on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the Dance of Death unites all.
