Somewhatearlier was Bernhard Strigel, by whom we findtwo bust portraits, pendants. This early masterwas at his best in portraiture; his figure compo-sitions, of which the Germanic Museum in Nurem-berg has several, are somewhat awkward and pro-vincial. Another rarely occurring master was HansMiilich, a Munich artist, who for a time was court-painter to Duke Albert V of Bavaria. His portraitof a man, found here, is in the manner of theBolognese school. Jan Stephan von Calcar acquiredextraordinary facility in imitating Titian andRaphael. His half-figure of a man with a blond. Durers master, Michael Wolgemut, is representedhere with a portrait of an old, clean-shaven man,in a brown dress with a white cap, which has fullyhis bourgeois style. It lacks all distinction or ele-gance, but is realistic in its elucidation, even glori-fication of the commonplace. Nearby hangs a knee-piece of the Madonna Enthroned, with twomusical angels, which for its rich renaissanceflavour may be ascribed to the Ulm school of theearly part of the 16th century. A few paintings bear the name of Lucas Cranachthe Elder, the most interesting of which is Abra-hams Sacrifice (Plate XXXVII). This panelmust have come from his later years, when the in-fluence of Durer had modified
