The Brown Hyena (Hyaena brunnea) is classified by the IUCN as Vulnerable. These omnivores are mainly scavengers which feed on the remains of carcasses of animals killed by other predators. Although they maintain a clan hierachy they usually forage alone. Female brown Hyenas are polyestrous. Photographed in the Nossob riverbed of the Kgalagadi transfrontier national park in South Africa.
