Birthroot - Trillium erectum
The root was traditionally used as an aid in childbirth. Native Americans used root tea for menstrual disorders. The whole plant was made into a poultice used to treat tumors, inflammation, and ulcers. Its foul smell attracts carrion flies that act as pollinators. Early herbalists used this ill-scented plant to treat gangrene, since, according to the Doctrine of Signatures, plants were used to cure the ailments they resembled.
