MACHINERY FOR CUTTING SLEEPERS.(Manufactured by Messrs. A. Ransome &•> Co., Chelsea, London.) In countries where timber is plentiful it often happens that sleepers can be cut close alongside therailway. To meet such cases estimates are subjoined of machines suitable for this purpose. For cutting out small sleepers, a plain saw bench, as shown in Fig. 42, will suffice to cut out 500sleepers per day, sawn on two sides, or 300 if sawn on four sides. The framing is cast in one piece, by. SLEEPER SAW BENCI which great strength and stiffness are attained. The bearings in which the saw spindles run are ofgreat length, and are fitted with special lubricating arrangements, and in consequence they last formany years in constant work. Care should be taken to keep the hemp packing well tucked in, so asto ensure a steady pressure sufficient to warm the saw all over alike, and thus cause it to expandequally and work smoothly. Cost of bench with 36 inch Cost of six-horse power portable engine to drive it Spare saws and spare parts for the engine £39 22C 25 For heavy work it is better to have a self-acting saw bench, as shown in Fig. 43. In this machinethe feed motion is driven from the saw spindle, and can be varied so as to bring the timber forward atrates varying from 15 to 60 feet a minute. This arrangement requires a little more steam power thana plain saw bench does, but it saves
