HEART, ILLUSTRATION
The heart is the organ which maintains circulation of the blood. The heart muscle, or myocardium, contracts upon receiving a nerve impulse, pumping the blood throughout the organism. It consists of four chambers, two atria and two ventricles. Each ventricle has a corresponding atrium connected by a valve opening. The heart is divided into two parts, with the blood flowing from the right heart to the lungs and returning through the left heart.
