The Old North Church, built in 1723, was inspired by the works of English architect Christopher Wren, who was responsible for rebuilding London after the Great Fire in 1666. The church is famous for the event in 1775 where Paul Revere's method of alerting patriots in nearby Charlestown was to use lanterns to describe the route being used by British troops, one if by land and two if by sea. Two lanterns were carried to and displayed in the steeple to reveal that the troops were moving by sea. The action was memorialized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1860 poem "Paul Revere's Ride. "The Georgian-styled church is listed on the Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. It is also one of the 16 sites on the famed Boston Freedom Trail.
