Poland, Warsaw: Night view of the Castle Square with the King Sigismund III Column.

King Sigismund’s Column in the centre of the Castle Square, the oldest secular monument in the capital of Poland. The monument was erected by Sigismund’s son, King Wladyslaw Ladislaus IV in 1644. The Germans destroyed the column in January 1945. The statue was damaged and bronze parts disappeared. The statue was reconstructed and mounted on a new column made of granite 1949. The Old Town complex includes many medieval buildings and fortifications. All these objects were completely destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt after 1945. The whole Old Town complex has been on the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites since 1980.
