Plesiosaur fossil. Fossil fragment of the anterior skull and mandible of a plesiosaur. Plesiosaurs were aquatic reptiles that were first discovered in the early 19th Century. They appeared at the end of the Triassic Period (around 200 million years ago) and thrived until the K-T extinction (around million years ago), at the end of the Cretaceous Period.
