Muster day was a day of universal frolicand enjoyment. On that day everybody drank hard ciderin unlimited quantities, while those who had acquired a taste for it drank Ja-wasthatmen who had offendedagainst the law oragainst public senti-ment, as representedby the church, werestood in the stocks orplaced in pillory. Itwas the privilege ofall those other menwho had been drink-ing hard cider orJamaica rum as thecase might be, to pelt these unfortunates with clods orstale eggs, or whatever else in the way of a missile mightbe handy. Muster day and other days of public gather-ing were selected for the punishment of these men inorder that they might be thus shamed into a better life, and in order that others might be deterred from offences.
