Suspended from the under side of the cover is a valveworking in combination with a double-ended lever having itsfulcrum bct\veen the two ends. From the ends of the levertwo cylinders are suspended, the upper and smaller one ofsolid iron, and the larger hollow, with holes in its top, so thatit is tilled with water. When the water stands at the desiredlevel in the boiler and column, the solid cylinder is heavierthan the larger immersed cylinder, and consequently keepsthe valve closed. As the water in the column falls, the hollowcylinder filled with water overbalances the weiglit of the solidcylinder when deprived of the buoyancy of the surroundingwater, and opens the valve, admitting steam to the alarm-whistle. The solid cylinder regains its counterlialance on the admission of water tothe boiler, closing thevalve. This alarm, which is the-inventionof Frank M. Ashley,is made by the AshleyEngineering Company,Hawthorne, N. j.;New York office, IMLiberty The motor has a normal speed of about GOO, which can beincreased Ijy a rheostat to 1,000 and 1,200, and reduced bygears to 275 without loss of power. These motors are manu-factured for a voltage of either 110, 220, and 500. TEST OF CUT AND WIRE NAILS. A coMMiTTEic consisting of Charles L. Bailey, Arthur , and Horace P. Tobey, have made a report on tlie hold-ing power of cut and wire nails. The tests were computed andarranged by Consulting Engineer AVilliam H. Burr, and weremade on the United States Testing JIachine at Watertown,Mass. The following is the substance of their report : At your request, I have examined, summarized and com-puted percentages upon the report of Major J. W. Keilly, ofthe United States Ordnance Department, giving in detail thetests made for ascertaining the relative holding jjowers of cutnails and wire nails, of equal lengths and weights ; whichtests were made at the United States Arsenal at Wateitown,Mass., un
