Bose-Einstein condensate, IBM research. IBM scientist placing the liquid form of a polymer in laser light (altering its colour), as part of research that created a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). Pioneering work at IBM Research demonstrated this complex quantum mechanical phenomenon using non-crystalline solid materials. The discovery, made using a luminescent polymer, has potential applications in developing novel optoelectronic devices including energy-efficient lasers and optical switches. Photographed in November 2013, at IBM Research-Zurich, Switzerland.
