Severe pain in these latter cases is a wellnigh constant symptom. After exposing himself to the X-rays a great Chronic Dermatitis, number of times, and having had a number of mild attacks of acute dermatitis—or perhaps without ever. Fig. 308. The hands, face and chest are most likely to become af-fected, because these parts are the most exposed to the rays. There is apigmentation of the skin very similar to tanning, such as sun and windwill produce. Freckles occur in some cases. The skin becomes harsh, dryand wrinkled—the same changes that occur with age. Hair drops outThe fingernails become brittle and thin and ridged longitudinally. Small,hard, scabby growths (keratoses) occur here and there. These growthsbreak down into ulcers, which often become cancerous. (Fig. 308.) There has been a great deal of discussion as toCancer. whether X-rays can. or cannot, produce cancer, but in the face of such reports as Dr. C. A. Porters* Ido not see how anyone can dispute it.
