King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and chicks. The chicks are covered in thick down, which is moulted at about a year old. Both parents look after their chick, and for the first 30-40 days after hatching, the chick is always with one of its parents. After this time it joins a creche, a group of chicks looked after by a few adults, while its parents hunt for fish and cephalopods (such as squid). The chick becomes fully independent after 12-14 months. Photographed at Volunteer Point, East Falkland, the Falkland Islands.
