Hewas educated at the college of New Jersey, gradu-ating in 1773 with honors, studied theology underRev. Mr. Roan, and was licensed to preach by thepresbytery of Hanover Oct. 26, 1775. Almost im-mediately Mr. Graham began to teach a classicalschool at Mount Pleasant, Va.,which was the beginning ofwhat finally became known asWashington and Lee univer-sity, and continued to preachto the two congregations ofTimber Ridge and Halls meet-ing-house, near history of Washington andLee university is closely ident-ified with that of the Scotch-Irish settlement of the uppervalley of Virginia.
