He published his Annals of Tennessee in 1853. This volume only brought the history of the State down to 1800, but he prepared a second volume and had it ready for the press, but it was destroyed when his house was burned during the Civil War. His work has always been accorded a high rank among State histories. Dr. Ramsey continued to act as President of the Tennessee Historical Society until his deatli in 1884,. Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey.
