Um Ahmed has been harvesting olives in Palestine for over a century and indeed olives have always played a major role in the Palestinian economy with many Palestinians in the West Bank depending on the olives harvest to survive. However, since the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, hundreds of thousands of olive trees have been uprooted to make space to Israeli settlements, settlements roads, Israeli military zones, and the “security wall”. Palestinian farmers working in their olive field have often witnessed several incidents of crop theft, harassment, and physical attacks by Israeli settlers, with some even restricted or banned to access their olive fields in the proximity of Israeli settlements, military outposts, settler ‘only' bypass roads, or on the other side of the security wall. Olive trees are part of the Palestinian heritage and a symbol of Palestinian identity. The threat to these centuries-old trees stands for a threat to the Palestinian presence on their land and to their identity
