MANLEY. (Ward.) (Certificated.) {Awarded Gold Medal at Pan- American Exposition.) Much to our satisfac- tion, this variety has outbloomed airy scarlet carnation we have ever grown. The blooms average very large, about 3 inches in diam- eter, and are borne on long, stiff, wiry stems, which spring from near the base of the plant. The color is a brilliant orange-scarlet, just the ideal shade that is want- ed at the holidays. It is one of the best keepers and shippers that we have grown and has been a prize-winner wherever shown. It is very fra- grant and the petals are nicely fringed. The foli- age is of that rich glau- cus green that every originator of carnations seeks to breed. The plants are free from di- sease, and it is a vigor- ous, free grower and pro- lific bloomer. Last Christmas we picked 500 blooms from about 70 running feet of 4-foot bench, and they sold on New York market at $ per 100, wholesale, and from that date onwards the bench continued to throw a grand cut of the finest scarlet blooms we have ever shipped to the New York market. Price, strong rooted cuttings, $ per 100 ; $ per 250 ; $ per 500 ; $ per 1,000. New Variegated Carnation VIOLANIA. (Ward.) A sport of Mrs. G. M. Bradt. Among the flowers of Mrs. Bradt frequent red and sometimes white sports appear. Cuttings of a white sport were saved, and when bloomed reverted toward the type, but with much less color in the marking. The plant is of the same habit but a little more vigorous and blooms slightly larger. The color effect is very pleasing and the blooms are preferred on the New York market to those of Mrs. Bradt. Stock limited. $ per 100. APOLLO. (Dorner.) We consider this one of our best clear brilliant scarlets, and recommend it as an early, free an
