Sleepwalking. Time lapse image of a young woman leaving her bed with arms outstretched. Sleepwalking (somnambulism) occurs during NREM (nonrapid eye movement) sleep or when aroused from this type of sleep. It is not a process of acting out dreams, and may be a regular tendency in some people. Sleepwalking may arise from night terror, which may involve loud or sudden behaviour, or the sleepwalker may talk in simple phrases. It may be worsened by anxiety, or may be associated with use of sleeping pills in the elderly. The sleepwalker should be gently steered back to bed, avoiding injury, especially if waking is difficult.
