Beatrice Mintz (born 1921), US embryologist, using a microscope in a laboratory, with transgenic mice at bottom. The zebra-striped mouse has two natural mothers and two natural fathers. Mintz pioneered genetic engineering techniques. She spent much of her career at cancer research centres in Philadelphia, USA. Her work in the 1960s led to the development of transgenic mice. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1973, she shared the March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology in 1996.
