Preliminary construction, before exca-vations for the piers and anchorages couldbe undertaken, was commenced in Decem-ber. 1932. This work involved the buildingof trestles, roadways and docks for thehandling of materials and equipment and in itself presented numerous interestingengineering features. On the Marin county side of the GoldenGate it was necessary to build a roadway,with heavy temporary bridge structuresalong the base of the cliff from the approx-imate location of the Fort Baker militarydock to the north pier site, just west of thelight house at Lime Point.
