Nassula protozoa conjugating. Differential interference contrast micrograph of two Nassula ornata ciliate protozoa undergoing conjugation, a form of sexual reproduction. During conjugation the protozoa attach to each other, and gametes (sex cells) pass between them, combining to form offspring. Ingested blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be seen enclosed in food vacuoles (coloured circles) inside the protozoa. Magnification: x360 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
