Rarely do so many intel-lectual gifts and Christian virtues meet in the same person, asedorn the character of Gen. Mitchel. His mind moved amono;the stars, and caught their brilliancy. His thoughts partook ofthe harmou}^ and grandeur of the worlds and systems that heexplored. His character was pure, his sentiments generous andlofty, and his love of country was second only to his love of the war, his discov-eries and contributions to astronomicalscience had rendered him eminent as an American scholar. Hispopular lectures made him a favorite with all, and inspired hiyhearers with a love for the l)eauties and sublimities of astronomy,and with adoration for the Creator and his marvelous works.
