The mostremaniable feature of the maeliine is the peculiarelastic blow, the force of which can be varied at thewill of the operator, from a slight to a heavy blow,by more or less pressure applied to the treadle, andwithout moving the work in any manner. A self-acting device attached to the maeliine stopsinstantly the lilow of the hammer, allowing the opera-tor to withdraw his work. An adjusiable anvilallows vises or other suitable contrivances to be at-tached, for holding work of dilTerent shapes andthicknesses, and an treadle (shown in engrav-ing) is furnished with each machine, to allow thesevises to be operated by the foot if desired. The work, while in the machine, is stationary,thus insuring the hammer always striking on therivet and heading it equally.
