Yogyakarta Vredeburg Fortress or Benteng Yogyakarta was first established as a Dutch fortress. In 1760, after the foundation of the new Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, the Dutch colonial administrators erected barracks close to the new Kraton Palace. By 1788 the Dutch had extended the compound and converted it into a fort. Vredeburg Fort served the Dutch administration for various civic and military during its regime.
