The floats of El Carmen and San Salvador are being prepared for the evenings celebrations.

“Las Parrandas de Remedios” is a Christmas festival held in the Cuban town of Remedios. The preparations in the weeks leading up to the Parrandas are surrounded in secrecy by the two competing neighbourhoods of the town. The neighbourhoods of San Salvador and El Carmen compete against each other in the form of floats, costumes, electric light parades and fireworks …….lots of fireworks. This Catholic celebration original purpose was to draw the people of the town to the church for mass on Christmas Eve. The event starts just before dusk at approximately 5pm on Christmas Eve and continues all through the night until dawn of the next morning. As you can imagine health and safety is not the top priority in Cuba but having a great time is. People purchase beer and alcohol from caged vendors throughout the day and by early evening is ready for the very long night ahead.
