K/T asteroid impact. Artwork depicting the asteroid that hit Earth about 65 million years ago. The land forms are shown as they were at the time. It is thought that this asteroid's impact contributed to the demise of the dinosaurs. The site of the impact is the Yucatan Peninsula, which is now bordered by: Florida, Cuba, Mexico & South America. Evidence of the impact has been found, dating it at the boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods (K/T boundary). Scientists believe that the asteroid was up to 20 kilometres in diameter, and that the impact created months of total darkness and decades of low global temperatures.
