An historical guide to French interiors, furniture, decoration, woodwork, & allied arts during the last half of the seventeenth century, the whole of the eighteenth century, and the earlier part of the nineteenth . e became amember of the French Academy in paid a visit to England in 1719. Hedied at Nogent, near Paris, 18th I have copied the criticisms ofHorace Walpolc on Watteau, as I thinkhis remarks arc very shrewd and to thepoint :— England has very slender pretensionsto this original and engaging painter, hehaving come hither only to consult , for whom he painted two pictures, that were sold in the doctors genius of Watteau resembled that ofhis countryman DUrfe. The one drewand the other wrote of imaginary nymphsand swains, and described a kind ofimpossible pastoral, a rural life led bythose opposites of rural simplicity, peopleof fashion and rank. Watteaus shepherd-esses, nay, his very sheep, are coquet ; yethe avoided the glare and clinquant of hiscountrymen ; and though he fell short ofthe dignified grace of the Italians, thereis an easy air in his figures, and that morefamiliar species of the graceful which wecall genteel. His nymphs are as much. Design for Decorative Panel. 194 Regency. WATTEAU.
