Monkwearmouth monastic church: C11th tower built above the peaked roofline of the original C7th A-S porch & W wall; an eroded figure of Christ in Majesty (or St Peter) is visible just below the apex of the porch roof. St Peter's priory was established AD674 by St Benedict Biscop & built by Frankish masons in Romanesque style. Biscop taught the young Venerable Bede here & the porch is also associated with St Ceolfrith & St Cuthbert.
