SKELETON, SHOULDER

Anatomical model of the shoulder of an adult human skeleton with ligaments, anterior view of the shoulder joint. The joint of the right shoulder is shown with its ligaments (in brown). The capsular ligaments (below) form a sheath surrounding both the head of the humerus and the lateral area of the shoulder blade. Additional ligaments strengthen the joint, holding together the humerus, the clavicle and the shoulder blade (by its lateral part or one of its two extensions, the coracoid process and acromion). These ligaments are the coracoclavicular ligaments (linking the coracoid process of the shoulder blade to the clavicle, top left), the coracoacromial and acromioclavicular ligaments (joining the coracoid process and the acromion, the acromion and the clavicle, respectively, top middle) and the coracohumeral ligament (attaching the coracoid process of the shoulder blade to the head of humerus, top right).
