About thirty steamfitters in Torontohave organized a new union, breakingaway from the Journeymen Plumbers. Acliarter has been obtained and new offi-cers elected. December 1, 1908 PLUMBER AND STEAMFITTER Faulty Chimneys and Drafts 0. E. Oldacre Outlines How Some of the Faults Can Be Remedied—Bad Construction of Chimneys the Bane of the Heating Contractor—Continued From Last Issue. There is no form or shape of chimnej-that is so liable to give trouble to theman who sells stoves and ranges or doesheating work, or to the user of thesegoods as the chimney that is wide andshallow. Especially is this the case ifthe long side of the chimney is exposed. in an outside wall with only one thick-ness of brick work between the flue andthe outside air. There are many reasons why such achimney may give trouble, though it mayapparently have sufficient area. The out-side walls may be porous, due to mortarjoints that have been eaten away by the weather and by the products of combus-tion. When the longest dimension of the fluois presented to the outside wall surfacethere is then an excessive amount of cool- ing surface that helps down the tempera-ture of the gases in the chimney, andconsequently, interferes with the draft. The poorest shaped chimney is shownin Fig. 9, one that measures 4x12 or4x13 inches. A much better shape isthat shown in Fig. 10. One that is stillmore to be preferred would be a chimneyhaving a round terra cotta or tile round chimney, one with a smoothterra cotta lining, whose diameter isequal to one of the dimensions of asquare chimney, though of a less area,
