South London . site now marked by Paradise Street. Herelived the old Duke whose life was saved by the death ofHenry the Eighth ; here was brought up the accomplishedEarl of Surrey whose life would have been saved had Henrydied a few days earlier. Leland, the antiquary and scholar, was the Earls tutor. The widow of Dr. Parker, Archbishopof Canterbury, obtained the house. Her heirs ceased to livein it ; the house was neglected, probably because no tenantcould be found for it. Finally, it was pulled down. It is Tin-: ROVAL HOUSES of south LONDOX III interesting to note the town houses which stood upon theBank from Rotherhithe to Battersea : that of the Prior ofLewes; of Sir John Fastolfe ; of the Augustines ; the Houseof St. INIary Overies ; Winchester House ; Rochester House ;Norfolk House ; and later, the house of the St. Johns at Bat-tersea. There are none between Bankside and Lambeth ;that part of the Embankment which lies between Blackfriarsand Westminster Bridge has no history and no HALL, LAMBETH Another noteworthy Lambeth house was that called CoptHall, afterwards Vauxhall, situated opposite to the gardensafterwards called Vauxhall. In this house the unfortunateArabella Stuart lived for a time. A good deal might bewritten about Copt Hall, but not in this place. The houses of the Archbishop, the Bishop of Rochester, and the Duke of Norfolk stood close together and clusteredround the church. The reason was the necessity of buildingon or near to the Embankment. Exactly opposite the south 112 SOUTH LONDON porch of the church may be observed a small and somewhatdecayed street grandly called the High. The name and thesituation close to the church indicate an individual andseparate existence of the town or village of Lambeth, ofwhich this was the principal street and the centre. Thevillage, in fact, did exist from very early times ; its populationfor the most part earned their livelihood as Thames were the lineal successors of that
