Photonics polymer, IBM research. IBM scientist Roger Dangel holding a prototype waveguide made of a new polymer material. This is a major advance in photonics, using such polymers for light transmission instead of electrical signals within supercomputers and data centres. This new material was unveiled by Dow Corning and IBM at the Photonics West conference in 2013. Potential applications include use of Big Data and the development of future exascale computers that can perform a billion billion computations per second.
