Amidst manydifficulties and trials the work was carried on for year we have to record the first baptisms of theChinese there. Last July we received our two first con-verts. We have now a congregation of from twelve totwenty Chinamen really interested in the truth. They areregular attendants, and are classed by their fellow-country-men as Christians. Our great object in going into Burmah was to enter. CARRYING A GRANDCHILD Western China. China was not then opened fromthe east. It was my privilege to make with Mr. Henry Soltau the first jour-ney across China from thewest. It takes twenty daysjourney to Ta-li Fu. Nowwe have a station, and Clarke is living there :Mrs. Clarke passed away afew months ago. Then yougo on for twelve days to Yun-nan Fu, and now we have astation there also, in whichMr. and Mrs. Eason are re-siding. At Kwei-yang Fu, inthe Kwei - CHAU province,twenty days journey further,we have Mr. and Mrs. Broum-tons station. Further north,twelve days journey, youcome to our work at Chung-king, in Sl-CHUEN, and thengoing north-west reach ourstation in Chen-tu, the capitalof Si-chuen, and so on toHankow. Now, when we went toBhamo, eight years ago, fromBhamo to Hankow there wasnot a single mission station,and from Mandalay on toHankow, not a single Chris-— tian.
