Enterovirus 68 virions, transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Also known as EV68, EV-D68 and HEV68, this virus is an enterovirus and a member of the Picornaviridae family. First isolated in California in 1962 and once considered rare, it has become an emerging disease in the 21st century. It has been implicated in cases of a polio-like disorder called acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). Enterovirus 68 is related to polio, and is a leading candidate for the cause of the condition.
