Modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Round Church was built by crusaders in the 12th century before the formation of the university. Churches with a round shape or dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre appear across western Europe in the wake of the First Crusade, often built by returning crusaders or Church in Cambridge is founded between 1115 and 1131 by ‘the fraternity of the Holy Sepulchre’ and ‘in honour of God and the holy Sepulchre’.
