Poster boards comparing the New York City Bike Share program to other modes of transportation.

The New York City Bike Share program was demonstrated in the Manhattan Bridge Archway in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn on September 17, 2011. Representatives from the New York City Department of Transportation and Alta Bicycle Share, the program operator recently selected by the city to operate the program, were on-hand to provide information and answer questions. The event was co-sponsored by the DUMBO Business Improvement District. The New York City Bike Share program will provide public rental bikes at self-service docking stations or kiosks located around the city. Basically, users will be able to check out a bike, ride to their destination, and return the bike to a nearby docking station. Users will be able to subscribe to an annual membership, or pay for one day or other shorter time periods. At the demo, attendees and passers-by were able to try out examples of the sturdy public bikes from other bike share programs that have already been implemented. There were bikes from the programs in Washington, DC, Boston, Minneapolis, Toronto, Ottawa, London, and Melbourne available to ride. New York City's program, which will have 10,000 bikes available at over 600 stations, is planned to begin in the summer of 2012.
