The view from behind a defensive position on a reproduced Civil War fort at the Pamplin Historical Park, Petersburg. Immediately in front of the earthwork fort is a large ditch. Next are a barrier of pointed stakes (fraise) followed by the remaining tree stumps (the whole area would have been cleared when the fort was constructed) between which wire would have been placed (to trip/slow down the advancing troops. The first barrier here shows tree trunks which have been cut down and then placed so that the remaining branches pointed towards the advancing soldiers.
