LABORATORY CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE COURSEPREPARATORY TO MEDICINE IN THE UNI-VERSITY OF Prof. J. T. Rothrock, M. at the Pharmaceutical Meeting, January 15, 1884. Mr. Thomas Ridgway Barker, in examining the ordinary liquoriceroot (Glycyrrhka glabra) finds imbedded in parenchyma and in wood, bundles of bast fibres. These bundles have what may be called abundle sheath in which are found crystals of calcium oxalate, shownto be such by the ordinary tests. Figure 1 shows the bundle in the parenchyma, seen in cross section. Fig. Figure 2 gives a longitudinal view of the same, divested of its sur-rounding parenchyma. Figures are magnified about 350 diameters. Such crystals and crystal sheaths are not unique. They are foundin the Aspidosperma Quebracho, for which see the essay by Dr. AdolphHansen, reprinted in the Therapeutic Gazette, October, 1880, p. 292, 9 130 Laboratory Contributions. J Am. Jour. Pharm\ March, 1884. and are also found in the stem of the anomalous Welwitschia mira-bilis, for a figure of which see De Bary Vergleichende Anatomie, There is, however, this difference between the liquorice root andthe other plants, i. e. in the former several fibres are included in asingle crystal sheath, while in the quebracho and welwitschia there isbut a single fibre. Mr. Jesse G. Shoemaker contributes two diagnostic characters inthe stems and roots (say one-fourth of an inch in diameter) of Gelsemi-um sempervirens, which so far as seen are peculiar in their association, Fi
