BRUSSELS, Belgium — The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, standing prominently on a hill in central Brussels, dates back to the 13th century, although a church has been on this site at least since the 11th century. It is the national cathedral of Belgium and site of royal coronations and weddings.
The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is a prominent Roman Catholic church located in Brussels, Belgium. It is dedicated to the patron saints of the city, St. Michael and St. Gudula, and is considered one of the most important religious buildings in the country. The cathedral sits atop Treurenberg Hill and is a notable example of Brabantine Gothic architecture, with construction beginning in the 13th century and continuing through the 15th century. The cathedral's exterior features two impressive towers flanking the main entrance, while the interior showcases a magnificent nave, transepts, and a choir. The church is adorned with numerous stained glass windows, including the exceptional 16th-century window depicting the Last Judgment. The cathedral also houses an ornate Baroque pulpit carved by Hendrik Frans Verbruggen in the late 17th century and an impressive organ with more than 4,000 pipes. The crypt beneath the cathedral dates back to the Romanesque period and contains the remains of the original Romanesque church that once stood on the site. The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is not only a place of worship but also a significant historical and cultural site.
