Much of the best work shownby studios of the better class is rather conventional, sothat the smaller and provincial men have no guide tohelp them and only too often lose interest in the artside and persist in grinding out the same stiff old stufffor filthy lucre, or to translate it, the almighty dollar. I know that before theAssociation was started there were many of us whoenvied you the educative influence of these gatheringsand admired the business acumen of your photographerswhich led them to make such sacrifices of time andmoney to cover huge distances. When the Associationwas mooted there were many who said that photog-raphers were too jealous over here to meet injustice of this was soon proved, and sincethe institution of the Annual Congress the mem-bership has increased yearly, for the photographers hereare as friendly as elsewhere. When they have had theopportunity they have proved themselves equally readyto learn.
