Another tablet on the monument reads:— On the 15th of August 1620 From the West Quay near this spot The famous Mayflower began her voyage Carrying the httle company of PILGRIM FATHERS Who were destined to be the founders of the New England States of America. Here the Pilgrims waited for a week while the Speedwell was being made readyfor sea, and while in port they were joined by John Alden. The story of theirreturn first to Dartmouth and then to Plymouth, where the Speedwell was finally. From Home and Haunts of the Pilgrim Fathers, by Alexander Mackenruil, BARBICAN, PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND,where the Mayflower lay before sailing for the New World.
