The goddess of charity or mercy,to whom childless women pray, resembles the Christiansymbol of the Virgin and Child, ancient Chinese books tellthat many examples of this style of group were sent tothe Christians, in Japan, during the Kith century. Sheis seated on open roekwork, with the child, vigorously mod-eled, and has a lotus flower in hand. Head has simplecoiled hair with long braids each side and sacred boss onforehead, a simple necklace is on breast, hands and fingersare very delicate. Robes are voluminous and particularlywell sculptured and undercut. Heir/lit, 18 inches. (Illustrated). Second Afternoon 382— FtKiEN Fkmkk of Hiddha (Ming) Heavy Fukien porcelain, covered with brilliant snow-whiteglaze. The figure is represented with closed eves seatedcross-legged, soles of feet upturned, on a lotus base. Headwith long-lobcd cars and conventional scroll-boss covering,right hand with the delicate fingers upturned, and left rest-ing on foot and hip. Robes are vigorously modeled, breastcovered with elaborate pearl necklace with the swastikaemblem.
