Cluain Padraig, Westport, Ireland. Architect: Simon J Kelly + Partners Architects, 2007. View of junction between two terrace ty

Cluain Padraig is a low-rise housing development comprising 23 dwellings in a suburban context in Westport. All units have dual aspect living spaces benefiting from southerly or westerly orientation, both opening out to private terraces, and overlooking the shared public area. Featured in 2007’s Irish Architecture Awards and OPUS awards. Commended in the 2009 RIAI Silver Medal shortlist, as an accomplished response to the most trenchant and difficult housing typology – speculatively built, medium density housing on the edges of our towns and cities. The primary site strategy and the organisation of the principal two dwelling types establish a central landscaped space, giving a singular identity to the scheme, the main terrace of 12 two storey houses providing a layered interface between the public front and the individual dwellings.
