Flying Artillery in attempt of Richmond. The Cannoneers who lept up with cavalry - in this swiftest branch of the service each man rides horseback. Flying artillery refers to artillery trained to rapid evolutions, that is, the men being either mounted or trained to spring upon the guns and caissons when they change position. Richmond, Virginia, served as the capital of the Confederate States of America for almost the entire American Civil War. It was a vital source of weapons and supplies for the war effort, and the terminus of five railroads. The Union made many attempts to invade Richmond.
