The enlarged thyroid in Askanazys caseled him to suggest the theory. No parathyroids were found at autopsy inthe patient of Higbee and Ellis. These two observers suggest that Pagetsdisease may be due to absence of parathyroid secretion and the consequentformation of substances which abstract calcium from the bones. In this dis-ease great quantities of new bone are formed, but calcification does not material undergoes absorption, and themedullary substance of the bone becomes ex-tremely vascular and filled with white blood-cells, and also with giant-cells. The boneslengthen and thicken. The long bones bend.
